      Novellas are frequently defined as works of fiction betw words long. They’re not quite novels, but they feel pretty substantial—there’s room for character development, complex plots, and more. Literary magazines may sometimes publish novellas, and they often appear in collections or anthologies alongside shorter works.   I’ve sometimes reflected that it’s difficult to guess how long a novel is, and not just because formatting in a print book can disguise the length. Some books, while short, have such intensity and depth one thinks of them as longer than they are. Some authors never use ten words if .

      In other words, your book’s genre tells the reader what to expect when they pick up your novel. Your readers will expect to know: How long the story will last; How far they’ll need to suspend their disbelief; What style the book is written in, or how they’ll experience the story; How the story will be structured. How long does it take to write a children’s book? We’ll include the caveat here that writing a children’s book does take less time than writing a full-length novel. Though one can’t underestimate the degree of care and effort that goes into writing for kids, the fact of the matter is, their books are shorter and therefore less time.

      I’ve reviewed books by high school age authors. Like adult authors some are good and some are not. Being a younger writer it may be helpful to get a wider number of pre-reviewers/betta readers to check your manuscript for grammar, spelling, consistency, writing style, and/or fact checking (for science or historical fiction) than someone with a little more writing experience.   And the book calls itself a novel — it’s right there on the copyright page: While incidents in the novel are based on real people, events and locations, they have been recreated fictitiously.
